How to Choose the Right Sign for Your Business
12 Oct 2026 by
A sign should do a clear job: help people find you, recognise your business, understand an offer, or navigate a space.
Before choosing a sign type or design, get clear on what you need it to do.
1. Decide what the sign needs to communicate
Start with the main message. Is the sign showing your business name, directing visitors, promoting a product, or sharing practical information? A sign with one clear purpose is easier to plan and read.
2. Consider where people will see it
Think about the sign’s location and how people approach it. A sign viewed from the road has different needs from one read at a reception desk. Nearby buildings, trees, other signs, and lighting can also affect visibility.
3. Think about viewing distance
People need to read a sign from the distance they’ll encounter it. Consider how large the main message needs to be and how much information can be understood at a glance. If people will be moving past the sign, keep the message especially simple.
4. Match the sign to the setting
Indoor and outdoor locations, mounting surfaces, exposure to weather, and installation requirements can all influence the options available. Share photos of the location and any known site requirements with your signage provider.
5. Keep the design focused
Make the main message easy to notice. Strong contrast and concise wording can help, while too many competing details can make a sign harder to understand quickly.
A useful starting checklist: What should the sign communicate? Where will it go? How far away will people be? What conditions will it be exposed to?
With those answers, you can have a more focused conversation about sign type, design, materials, and installation.
